Analysis

The Roborock S8 and Roomba j7+ are both self-emptying LiDAR robots, but they optimize for different problems. The S8 wins on raw cleaning performance: 6,000 Pa of suction is unusually strong for this class, and the sonic mopping attachment oscillates at 3,000 times per minute — enough to scrub up dried-on coffee or pet food residue that a damp pad just smears around. If your floor mix is >50% hard floors, the S8 does in one pass what a Roomba needs two appliances to do.

The Roomba j7+'s differentiator is PrecisionVision obstacle avoidance. Its front-facing camera identifies cords, socks, and — critically — pet waste before the robot drives into it. Roborock's structured-light obstacle avoidance works well for larger objects but is less reliable with flat items like power cables or thin debris. If you have dogs or cats, or a household where floor clutter is common, the Roomba's camera-based system prevents the most frustrating robot vacuum failure mode: the robot spreading the mess instead of cleaning it.

On self-emptying, the two docks differ meaningfully. Roborock's bagless dock stores 2.5L and requires manual emptying every few weeks. The Roomba's Clean Base uses AllergenLock bags that contain debris for ~60 days and seal shut when removed — better for allergy sufferers since there's no dust cloud during emptying. However, the bagged design adds a recurring consumable that the Roborock dock avoids.

Runtime is a real differentiator. The j7+ gets ~75 minutes per charge and recharges-and-resumes to complete large areas; the S8 runs 180 minutes and typically finishes a 1,500 sq ft floor plan without stopping. For homes above 1,200 sq ft, the S8's single-pass efficiency reduces total clean time and avoids the recharge gap where coverage may be uneven.

Both use multi-floor LiDAR mapping with room-specific scheduling and no-go zones. In practice the apps are comparable; iRobot's Genius AI learns preferences over time and suggests schedule adjustments, while Roborock's app is more manual but highly configurable (per-room suction levels, mop water output, etc.). Choose the S8 for a clean-everything robot on mixed floors; choose the j7+ if pet accidents are a real concern or you want sealed bag disposal.

Who Should Buy Which

Best for Homes with Hard Floors

Roborock S8

The sonic mopping system makes 3,000 scrubs per minute — more than enough to lift dried spills that a dry pass leaves behind. It vacuums and mops in the same run, so floors get a full clean without scheduling separate sessions.

Best for Pet Owners

iRobot Roomba j7+

PrecisionVision camera detects and avoids pet waste before the robot contacts it — iRobot backs this with a "P.O.O.P. Guarantee" (Product Only. Objects. Promise.). For households with dogs or cats, this is a meaningful insurance policy the Roborock cannot match.

Best for Large Homes

Roborock S8

180-minute runtime covers most multi-room floor plans in a single pass. With 6,000 Pa of suction it handles thick rugs without slowing. The larger dock bin (2.5L vs 0.4L) also means less frequent bag changes for heavy-use households.

Best Low-Maintenance Setup

iRobot Roomba j7+

AllergenLock bags capture debris for up to 60 days before needing replacement. Combined with iRobot's Genius AI that learns cleaning preferences and automatically adjusts schedules, it requires the least ongoing configuration of the two.
