The Roomba j9+ and Roborock S8+ are premium self-emptying robots that appeal to different kinds of households. The core trade-off is obstacle avoidance and AI learning versus mopping and raw runtime.

The Roomba j9+'s standout feature is PrecisionVision obstacle avoidance. Its front camera identifies and routes around specific objects — pet waste, socks, cables — before making contact. iRobot backs the pet waste avoidance with a guarantee: if the robot fails to avoid an accident and spreads it, iRobot replaces the robot. For households with dogs or cats, this is a meaningful difference. The j9+ also ships with Dirt Detective, which uses historical cleaning data to identify high-traffic zones and automatically allocate more passes to areas that consistently accumulate more debris — an adaptive behavior the Roborock app doesn't replicate.

The Roborock S8+ wins on mopping, runtime, and suction. 6,000 Pa of suction is at the top of its class; iRobot doesn't publish suction specs for the j9+ but independent tests put it significantly lower. The sonic mopping system oscillates at 3,000 times per minute — enough to scrub dried coffee or pet food residue off hardwood and tile without a second pass. The j9+ offers no mopping whatsoever. Runtime is similarly lopsided: 180 minutes versus ~90 means the S8+ handles larger homes in one session while the j9+ frequently recharges and resumes, sometimes creating inconsistent coverage near the interruption point.

Both docks auto-empty the robot dustbin, but they work differently. The j9+'s Clean Base uses AllergenLock bags rated for ~60 days — when you pull the bag, it self-seals, containing all debris and allergens. Those replacement bags add an ongoing consumable. The S8+ uses a bagless 2.5L dock bin that you periodically empty by hand. It holds more debris but releases a small dust puff on emptying — a real concern if anyone in the household has allergies.

For the Roomba j9+, the iRobot OS Genius AI is genuinely useful over time: it learns usage patterns, suggests schedule adjustments based on traffic data, and issues "Extra Clean" suggestions for areas that need more attention. Roborock's app is highly configurable but manual — you set per-room suction, mop flow, and no-go zones, but the robot doesn't self-adjust. Choose the j9+ if pets, allergy management, or adaptive AI are priorities. Choose the S8+ if mopping capability and runtime are more important than obstacle camera smarts.
