When would the iO 5 earn its extra cost?

The useful question is how you want to use the brush each day. If you want to switch it on, follow a timer and put it away, start with the iO 3 and compare its actual bundle price. If you want to use a phone for brushing guidance, investigate the iO 5. Our recommendation depends on those preferences, not on assuming the higher model number cleans better.

What the upgrade adds

The iO 5 listing documents app position detection, illuminated mode selection and five modes. Compared with the iO 3’s three modes, the additions are Super-Sensitive and Intense Clean. Decide whether you want those controls before opening a retailer listing. If you expect to stay on the default mode and ignore the app, those additions are a weak reason to pay more.

Pressure feedback is already on the iO 3

Oral-B describes three pressure states on the iO 3, including feedback for pressing too lightly. The previous version of this comparison incorrectly gave that extra state to the iO 5 alone. Do not upgrade just to obtain a feature the less expensive handle already offers.

Compare the kit, not just the handle number

A sale or different set of accessories can change the price gap. Compare handle count, replacement heads and any case you need before deciding which offer is better value. Both use the iO head family, so moving from one to the other does not require a different type of replacement head. A bundle with extra heads is useful only if you would otherwise buy them.
