That's the whole trade-off.

The backlit mode icons mean you can see which mode is active at a glance rather than cycling through from memory. The app coaching goes further than the iO 4's basic timer connection — the iO 5 uses real-time AI position detection to track your coverage across 6 zones, flagging which areas got skipped or rushed after each session. Intense Clean fills a gap in the iO 4's lineup: it's the option for days after heavily staining foods or when a deeper clean is the priority. Some users cycle through intensities based on how their mouth feels — more aggressive some days, gentler during post-treatment recovery. The iO 5's backlit display makes that switching frictionless.

If you'll genuinely check the zone map after sessions, the iO 5 earns its extra cost. If you won't, you're paying for infrastructure you'll ignore. Be honest about that before choosing.

Go with the iO Series 4 if 14-day battery matters, you don't want an app dependency, and four modes are enough. Pick the iO Series 5 if your dentist has flagged a recurring weak spot, you want Intense Clean in rotation, or you'd actually use the real-time zone tracking to close brushing gaps. Whichever handle you choose, the iO head ecosystem transfers — both brushes take the same replacement heads.
