JLab Go Air Pop+ vs Soundcore P20i

Two budget earbuds, two different ideas of what cheap should mean. JLab shrinks the Go Air Pop+ to 3.9 g per bud, folds a USB-C cable into a case about the size of a credit card, and adds a Be Aware ambient mode the Soundcore P20i lacks entirely. Anker goes the other way. The P20i runs a 10 mm driver against JLab’s 6 mm, decodes AAC as well as SBC, carries an IPX5 rating and ships with an app holding 22 EQ presets plus a Gaming Mode. Neither pair has active noise cancellation or multipoint, and both share Bluetooth 5.3, three ear-tip sizes, single-bud use and remappable touch controls. So the split is clean. Size and awareness on one side, bass and toughness on the other.

JLab’s case is the real headline. Its USB-C charging cable lives inside the shell, which means you never hunt for one, and the whole thing vanishes into a coin pocket in a way no P20i case can. That convenience has a catch: owners complain the cable is very short, it can’t be replaced if it frays, and at least one reports the case refusing to charge from certain USB-PD bricks. Total runtime still favours JLab at 35 hours with the case against 30 for the P20i. Be Aware, triggered by a triple-tap, pipes traffic and voices in without pulling a bud out. And the stock tune is bass-forward without being sloppy; reviewers call it exciting and better than the class usually manages. Thirteen colours beat five. A 2-year warranty beats 18 months.

Ten millimetres of driver is where the P20i earns its bass reputation. Which has better sound out of the box? The JLab, and it isn’t close. The P20i is tuned dark, treble nearly vanishes at lower volumes, and one lab described the default profile as muddy and bloated. The Treble Booster preset or a custom EQ curve is effectively mandatory. Once you fix that, the Soundcore app is the richer of the two, with 22 presets, a custom EQ, a Gaming Mode and remappable taps against JLab’s EQ3 presets and custom curve. AAC support matters for iPhone owners, since the JLab only speaks SBC. IPX5 shrugs off sweat and rain a step better than IPX4. Per-charge battery favours Anker too, 10 hours claimed and about 8.5 measured, where the JLab claims 9 and lands nearer 7.8. Fast charging widens that gap. Ten minutes in the P20i case buys two hours of playback; the same ten minutes gives the JLab one.

Picture a normal week. You slip the JLab case into the fifth pocket of your jeans and forget it’s there. Walking to the train, a triple-tap switches on Be Aware and you hear the bus before you step off the kerb; on the P20i you pull a bud out instead. At the gym the maths flips. IPX5 tolerates a soaked shirt better than IPX4, and a bass-heavy tune suits deadlifts more than it suits a podcast. Stream from an iPhone and the P20i’s AAC keeps music cleaner than SBC on the JLab, though you’ll only notice on quieter recordings. Take a call on either and expect the same complaint from the other end. Both mics are weak. Run one bud at a time on a long day and both cooperate, the JLab through Dual Connect, the P20i through its own single-bud mode. Two smaller annoyances belong to the P20i: its touch controls react slowly, and a bumped case can wake the buds in your bag.

Buy the JLab Go Air Pop+ if pocket size, street awareness and total runtime matter more than raw bass. It’s also the pick for anyone who loses charging cables or wants a colour that isn’t black. The Soundcore P20i is the better buy for iPhone users, gym regulars and anyone willing to spend two minutes in the app fixing the EQ, because the 10 mm driver, AAC, IPX5 and 10-hour buds are real advantages once the tuning is sorted. Skip both if you want ANC or multipoint. Neither has them, and Amazon already flags JLab’s newer Go Pods ANC on the listing for shoppers who need noise cancelling at this end of the market. For most people the P20i is the stronger earbud. The JLab is the stronger pocket companion.
