The Shark Matrix Plus and Roomba i4+ are popular mid-range self-emptying robots. They match closely on suction and mapping capability, but differ meaningfully on obstacle avoidance, cleaning patterns, and how they handle emptying.

The Shark Matrix Plus uses a grid-based cleaning pattern that covers floors in systematic rows — the same method a human would use to make sure nothing is missed. This is called Matrix Clean, and it produces complete, predictable coverage especially in larger open rooms. The Roomba i4+ uses an adaptive pattern that navigates room by room using vSLAM (visual simultaneous localization and mapping), which works well in complex multi-room layouts but can leave narrow uncovered strips in wide open spaces where it repeatedly crosses the same path rather than gridding the area.

On obstacle avoidance, the Shark has a clear advantage: its AI Vision camera identifies objects before contacting them and reroutes around them. The Roomba i4+ uses bump-and-redirect sensors — it physically touches the obstacle before changing direction. In a clean, uncluttered home this rarely matters; in homes with pet toys, shoes by the door, or cables on the floor, the Shark saves the objects and itself from unnecessary impacts. The i4+ does not include the PrecisionVision camera found in Roomba's j-series models.

Both docks store 60 days of debris, but the dock mechanics differ. The Roomba i4+'s Clean Base uses AllergenLock bags that self-seal on removal — when you pull the bag, it pinches shut, containing all dust and allergens. Shark's bagless dock requires you to open a port and dump the bin, releasing a small dust plume each time. If anyone in your household has allergies, the Roomba's sealed disposal is a practical daily advantage, though it does require replacement bags.

Runtime gives the Shark another edge: 120 minutes versus 90 for the Roomba i4+. Both robots recharge and resume to complete larger homes, but the Shark finishes larger areas in a single continuous pass more often. For homes under 1,200 sq ft, this difference rarely matters; above that, the Shark's longer runtime means fewer interruptions. Choose the Shark Matrix Plus if you prioritize orderly coverage, camera-based obstacle avoidance, and longer runtime. Choose the Roomba i4+ if allergy-safe disposal and iRobot's long-term software support matter more.
